Arlington, Virginia: The Perfect Blend of Historic and Modern

the War Memorial, Arlington, Virginia Arlington, Virginia is an "urban county" located across the Potomac River less than 7 miles from the nation's capitol of Washington, D.C. Its borders join up with the nearby cities of Falls Church and Alexandria and the country of Fairfax. It has earned many distinctions, including most walkable city, most educated city, best city in which to weather a recession, and has one of the highest median household incomes in the United States.

Arlington, Virginia was one of the earliest settled areas of what is now the United States. It is closely linked to its history as it has numerous monuments, parks, cemeteries, and historic buildings that have been carefully preserved among the newer more modern structures of banking and finance in which many residents of Arlington are employed. The majority of workers in Arlington are employed in government, however. These people either work at the Pentagon (which is in Washington D.C. according to its postal address and Arlington County according to its actual location) or commute to nearby Washington D.C.

Arlington, VA is best known as the location of Arlington National Cemetery, a resting place for the nation's fighting men and women for nearly 150 years. Almost 300,000 people are buried in its 200 acres from minutemen in the Revolutionary War to fallen soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan. There are several monuments in and around the cemetery including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the eternal flame marking John F. a suburban home, Arlington, VA Arlington, Virginia has won numerous awards for its urban planning, housing and transit initiatives and it well deserves them. Arlington is a great city for commuters, as its public transit and urban development have matured hand in hand. Most of the major employers in government and business as well as many of the retail shopping locations are clustered around the subway stations to make it easier for employees to commute to work. This strategy has worked so well that each subway station is like its own mini city within the larger city. Within these "urban villages" what little housing you will commonly find is high rise condos and apartments which are generally fairly high-rent because of the convenient location.

Conversely there are many more neighborhoods in Arlington, VA that are entirely residential. These areas tend to be tree-lined and traffic-calmed and are popular with government and finance workers with families. Because of the highly planned nature of Arlington's development these neighborhoods tend to be fairly homogeneous with regard to the types of homes you will find in each one. Some are older neighborhoods where many of the larger mansions and town homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Others, usually the ones located furthest from the city center, are more modern.
